Q&A with Dr Sabine Donnai, renowned general physician and globally recognised expert in proactive health management
03/03/25Taylor Howes recently hosted the Women in Business Breakfast, featuring a thought-provoking discussion on health and longevity with the esteemed Dr. Sabine.
Sharing her expertise, Dr. Sabine provided valuable insights on preserving health—because, after all, health is wealth.
At Taylor Howes, we believe in the powerful connection between wellness and interior design. Proven psychological research shows that the way we design our spaces directly impacts our mental and physical well-being. By creating environments that promote balance and harmony, we enhance not just the aesthetics of a space but also the quality of life within it.
We sat down with Dr Sabine to talk about longevity, wellness and health.
In what ways do interiors influence our overall well-being? Do they have a direct impact on wellness?
The physiological impact of a well-designed living space on our health is rooted in a field called neuroaesthetics—the scientific study of how our brain reacts on a subconscious level to aesthetics, beauty, and space, and the effect this has on our emotions, well-being, and physiology.
These effects can be measured through autonomic nervous system responses, sleep quality, circadian rhythms, mental health, stress hormone levels, and the production of beneficial chemicals such as oxytocin, which contribute to overall health. the impact of a thoughtfully designed space can even be comparable to meditation. key factors such as natural lighting, open spaces that encourage movement, calming bedroom environments, dimmed lighting, low noise levels, and temperature control promote quality sleep, which in turn strengthens the immune system, optimises endorphin release, enhances cognitive function, and supports detoxification.
Our environment is an extension of our mind, shaping how we think, feel, and function. research shows that interior design choices—from flooring to lighting—can improve mental health, reduce stress and fatigue, and even enhance creativity.
Elements such as light, colour, temperature, and spaciousness each play a role in well-being, but it is the harmonious combination of these factors that has the greatest impact. a well-planned space, with appropriately sized furniture and efficient functionality, creates a sense of balance and comfort. even an eclectic design can feel cohesive when properly curated.
Incorporating curved shapes instead of sharp, angular ones fosters a more inviting and less intimidating environment. different shapes trigger unique psychological responses, influencing our emotions, thoughts, and perceptions.
Bringing elements of nature indoors—such as plants, flowers, and organic materials—enhances feelings of calm, safety, and abundance, reinforcing a sense of well-being.
Three key recommendations for enhancing quality of life
- Maximise natural light and embrace biophilic design – incorporating indoor plants and abundant natural light improves cognitive function, creativity, and overall happiness.
- Use natural materials – choose calm yet engaging textures that provide both aesthetic appeal and sensory comfort.
- Design your bedroom exclusively for rest and relaxation – keep it tech-free and wifi-free, with soft, romantic colours, dimmed lighting, and a cool, tranquil atmosphere, ensuring it remains the most peaceful space in the home.
Favourite wellness practices for a balanced lifestyle
One of my favourite wellness practices is walking in nature while being fully present—without distractions from phones or screens. the benefits of this practice are well-documented under the attention restoration theory, which suggests that spending time in nature restores cognitive function, enhances focus, and replenishes mental energy, particularly after prolonged concentration on demanding tasks.
Our evolutionary connection to nature means that being in a natural environment engages our subconscious mind, refocuses our thoughts, and helps us achieve an optimal mental state—both calm and focused.
